If we are not happy, how can we thrive, grow, or enjoy success in our business and life?
Communication – Why Listening is the Most Underrated Business Skill
Communication – Listen First, Speak with Purpose
I’ll be honest—this one has taken me some time to learn.
Like many people who work in marketing and communications, I’ve always loved words. I’m quick to spot solutions and jump in with ideas. But over the years, I’ve realised something important: if we don’t truly listen first, we risk missing what really matters.
Communication isn’t just about being articulate. It’s about connection. And connection begins with understanding.
What is communication in business? It’s the way you listen to your audience, reflect their needs, and share your value clearly, warmly, and consistently. It shows up in your emails, your proposals, your content, and your client conversations.
Why it matters:
-
People want to feel heard and understood before they buy anything.
-
Listening builds trust—fast.
-
Clear, relevant messaging creates stronger relationships and better results.
Here’s what I’ve learned: Real listening is a skill. It takes practice. It means holding back from jumping in too soon, asking better questions, and creating space for your clients to open up.
How to improve your communication:
-
Start by listening more than you speak—online and in person
-
Use language that mirrors your audience’s concerns and goals
-
Ditch the jargon and keep it human, clear, and consistent
-
Share helpful, value-driven insights that educate and support
Weekly Challenge: Speak to one client or lead this week. Really listen. Ask what they’re finding hard right now. Then look at your last piece of content—does it reflect what they need to hear?
If not, update it. Small shifts in your language and tone can make a big difference in how you're heard—and how your business is remembered.
Because when you listen well, you communicate with purpose. And that’s when your message truly lands.
